Online Scent Theory Course

Understand the odor. Read the environment. Trust the dog.

 

This online Scent Theory course is designed to give K9 handlers a stronger understanding of how scent is created, how it moves, and how environmental conditions affect what the dog is actually experiencing during a search.

Students will explore canine olfaction and the science behind odor, including VOCs, scent movement, thermals, wind, temperature, humidity, terrain, vegetation, soil, and water. The course also examines how odor behaves in real-world search environments—including surface, elevated, buried, shoreline, and water searches.

​

Through visual instruction and search scenarios, students will learn how to recognize the difference between odor availability and actual source location, understand why a dog may indicate away from the source, and make better search decisions based on both environmental conditions and the dog's behavior.

Topics include canine nasal anatomy and airflow, VOCs and odor production, scent durability, bioturbation, buried and subsurface odor, odor movement through vegetation and water, environmental influences on scent, tracking vs. mantrailing, scent discrimination, water HRD concepts, and pre-search environmental assessment.

The goal isn't to teach handlers where the odor should be. It's to help them understand why the odor may be where the dog says it is.

Designed as an educational resource for SAR K9 handlers, first responders, law enforcement, and others interested in understanding working-dog scent theory.
